Alexander parked his car outside of the mansion where he knew Daphne was currently being kept. He felt guilty that he hadn’t been to see her and tell her the news sooner, but by the time he had gotten back from New York, he was exhausted. He’d told himself he would have a nap, but instead, he had crashed and woke up at lunchtime the next day. He knew Daphne would be at work until the evening, so he had decided to call round about six.

It was now nine. The truth was, as much as Alexander wanted to see Daphne, he didn’t want to have to break her heart. He didn’t want to have to tell her that Diego wasn’t in love with her, even though it meant maybe she would find it in her heart to love him instead.

No, he told himself. That was never going to happen no matter what he said to her. He had to get that idea out of his head before he drove himself insane. He had spent years getting over Daphne. He couldn’t let himself fall for her all over again.

He didn’t have to wait long before an old woman wearing a red dressing gown pulled the door open a crack.

“I’m sorry to disturb you,” he said, noting the fact that she was in her night clothes. She grunted. Whether it was a complaint or an acceptance of his apology Alexander wasn’t sure, so he went on. “I need to speak to Daphne Alvarez please.”

“No,” the old woman said.

“Excuse me,” Alexander said, thinking he must have misheard her.

“No, you cannot speak to Ms. Alvarez. She isn’t permitted gentlemen callers,” the old woman said.

“Is that so?” Alexander said, raising an eyebrow.

The old woman nodded and started to close the door. Alexander thought fast. He pulled his cell phone out of the pocket of his jeans and held it out to the old woman. She frowned, but she stopped closing the door.

“I’m not giving her no cell phone either,” she said.

“I’m not asking you to,” Alexander said. “I was just offering you the use of my cell phone to save you going back into the house for yours.”

The old woman looked at him, her confusion written all over her face.

“What are you talking about?” she snapped. “Coming here in the middle of the night. Demanding things and wasting my time.”

“Ok, it’s hardly the middle of the night Mrs.
