Alexander parked his car outside of the mansion where he knew Daphne was currently being kept. He felt guilty that he hadnât been to see her and tell her the news sooner, but by the time he had gotten back from New York, he was exhausted. Heâd told himself he would have a nap, but instead, he had crashed and woke up at lunchtime the next day. He knew Daphne would be at work until the evening, so he had decided to call round about six.
It was now nine. The truth was, as much as Alexander wanted to see Daphne, he didnât want to have to break her heart. He didnât want to have to tell her that Diego wasnât in love with her, even though it meant maybe she would find it in her heart to love him instead.
No, he told himself. That was never going to happen no matter what he said to her. He had to get that idea out of his head before he drove himself insane. He had spent years getting over Daphne. He couldnât let himself fall for her all over again.
Alexander watched the clock on his dashboard change from nine oh one to nine oh two. He forced himself to get out of the car, knowing that if he didnât do it soon, he would chicken out and go back home. And then what? Just not update Daphne and then ignore her calls for the rest of his life?
Taking a deep breath to steady his nerves, Alexander walked up to the door of the mansion. He ran his hands over the top of his head, feeling the spiky hairs rub against his palms. He rang the doorbell and waited.
He didnât have to wait long before an old woman wearing a red dressing gown pulled the door open a crack.
âIâm sorry to disturb you,â he said, noting the fact that she was in her night clothes. She grunted. Whether it was a complaint or an acceptance of his apology Alexander wasnât sure, so he went on. âI need to speak to Daphne Alvarez please.â
âNo,â the old woman said.
âExcuse me,â Alexander said, thinking he must have misheard her.
âNo, you cannot speak to Ms. Alvarez. She isnât permitted gentlemen callers,â the old woman said.
âIs that so?â Alexander said, raising an eyebrow.
The old woman nodded and started to close the door. Alexander thought fast. He pulled his cell phone out of the pocket of his jeans and held it out to the old woman. She frowned, but she stopped closing the door.
âIâm not giving her no cell phone either,â she said.
âIâm not asking you to,â Alexander said. âI was just offering you the use of my cell phone to save you going back into the house for yours.â
The old woman looked at him, her confusion written all over her face.
âWhat are you talking about?â she snapped. âComing here in the middle of the night. Demanding things and wasting my time.â
âOk, itâs hardly the middle of the night Mrs.
